Healthy Fats in Grass Fed Beef

October 30, 2018

Fats, especially saturated fats, have gotten a bad rap over the years. We were told not to eat red meat, stay away from butter and not to even think about frying up some eggs. With more research and new information coming to light, it looks as though these fats may not be as bad for us as was once thought.

Red Meat in particular is nutrient dense and contains essential amino acids, important minerals such as iron, zinc and selenium, as well as vitamins A,  B6, B12, D, and E.  Not only that, but red meat contains an array of fats, including saturated fats, essential fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid(CLA).

Saturated fats are great for cooking with because they are not easily oxidized or damaged.  They also work in the body to help protect the unsaturated fats from damage, and although we were led to believe that saturated fats cause coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease, recent studies are now disproving this. Essential fatty acids are called such because the human body cannot make them, and they therefore must be obtained through the diet. Essential fatty acids have shown to help with weight loss and lower blood pressure, and reduce inflammation.  Conjugated linoleic acid comes from omega-6 fatty acids and has proven to help with weight loss, improvement of insulin sensitivity, and may even protect against breast cancer.

One should note, however, that when consuming red meat, quality counts. Numerous studies have shown that grass-fed meat has a much higher essential fatty acid and conjugated linoleic acid content than its grain free counterparts, making grass-fed the more promising choice.

If you are looking for more ways to incorporate grass-fed meat into your diet, try cooking a Hearty Winter Stew using Stewing Beef from NIKU Farms.  Using grass-fed stewing beef, potatoes, carrots and a warming broth this stew is easy to make, delicious, and perfect for those snowy, cold evenings.
